Just Where Is Pigeon, Michigan?

In 1883, the Pontiac, Oxford, and Port Austin Railroad, a north-south line, had been extended from the south up to Caseville and a depot was built in a small settlement called Berne, (a mile north of what is now Pigeon). Around 1886, the Saginaw, Tuscola and Huron Railroad built tracks through a tamarack swamp in Western Huron County and crossed the north-south P.O.& P line at a point one mile south of Berne. This railroad crossing became known as Berne junction. Soon thereafter, the population of Berne dwindled as people moved to the junction where they established a community they called Pigeon in 1888.

The railroads later merged and in 1895 the Village of Pigeon was founded at the crossing of the Grand Truck & Pere Marquette Railroads. Eight years later, in 1903, the Village was incorporated.
